2006/2007 Programmatic Goals

  • Develop and institute a "health career academy" curriculum that will serve to support youth interest and ability to pursue a health profession.
  • Establish partnerships with middle and high schools in medically underserved areas to create Health Resource Centers that focuses on the physical   and mental health needs of youth.
  • Continue to build a community-based collaborative partnership that address health care disparities and bridge the barriers that hinder or prevent access to primary care.
  • Refine and broadly implement our citywide Health Navigator Program which trains residents to serve as culturally competent health navigators who provide effective peer education for residents in medically vulnerable neighborhoods.
  • Increased empowerment of residents through effective and culturally appropriate community-based outreach and education services on how to access and effectively use available free or affordable health and mental health care services and resources; thus improving the health outcomes and mental wellbeing of underserved District of Columbia residents.
  • Decrease health care disparities and improve outcomes for women and men by educating them on breast, cervical, ovarian, prostate, and colorectal cancers and guiding them toward health services for screening and testing.
  • Broaden professional development opportunities and experiences to public health leaders such as outreach workers, clinicians, nurses, and social workers to increase their ability and skill level in dealing with the rapidly changing health care environment.
